There are plenty of reasons for employers to look at the operation of their fleet and company drivers. For that reason, our fleet driver training programmes are based on the needs of the individual client. Our experienced fleet trainers, who are experts in the field of road safety, will offer the best advice possible to your company, whilst providing an extremely high standard of fleet driver training.
Driver Risk Assessments
If anyone within your company drives on company business, you are obliged to perform a risk assessment of the activity. If you have 5 or more employees, you are obliged to have this risk assessment written down. This could include delivery van drivers, company car drivers, community/school minibuses drivers and even occasional drivers who are using their own vehicle – the employer still has a ‘duty of care’ to protect its employees and the general public are not put at risk by work related driving activities as stipulated in The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Our Driver Risk Assessments will be carried out at your workplace and tailored to your needs. All on the road risk assessments will be carried out by a DSA Approved trainer. For each candidate, a full written report and risk assessment will be completed along with any recommendations. We can advise you on various records that need to be kept, the introduction of a log book (if not already in use)
These driver assessments take 1.5hrs and include licence and eyesight check, vehicle safety checks, journey planning, Highway Code and in-car driving assessment.
This covers the minimum requirement needed for Health and Safety compliance. Obviously, we would discuss what requirements you may have over and above this.
The Law
The law requires the employer to ensure all reasonable measures are made in regard to The Health & Safety Act of 1974 to its staff, this includes driving.
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations refer to the need to carry out risk assessments regarding the health and safety of employees whilst at work and the general public who could be affect by your employees. Driving on work business in any vehicle is affected by this legislation as the vehicle is regarded as a place of work. It is therefore essential to assess each employee who is required to drive on company business at any time.
If staff are involved in any serious incidents the organisation can now be held part responsible under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.
The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 puts more responsibility onto the management of companies and organisations. In the case of a fatality caused in part by serious failures in health and safety management, criminal prosecutions can now be brought against the corporate body.
Penalties include unlimited fines, remedial orders and even publicity orders.
